Right to information (RTI) act 2005 purpose timely response to citizens requests for government information. since every citizen pays taxes therefore he is entitled to know how the government is functioning. the act empowers every citizen to seek any information from the government obtain copies at any government documents , inspects any government document. works and records and take certified samples of any government work.
RTI for citizen to secure access toinformation under the control of public authorities, in order to promote transparency and accountability in the working of every public authorities to constitution of a central information commission and state information commission and for matters connected. this law was passed by parliament on 15th June 2005 and came into force on 13 Oct 2005.
The RTI extends to the whole of India except the state of Jammu & Kashmir. All authorities covered must appoint their public information officer (PIO), in addition, every public authorities is required to designate assistant public information officer (APIO) to receive RTI request and appeals for forwarding to the PIOs of their public authority. the reply should be give within 30 days of receipt and information concerning corruption and human rights violations is to be provided within 45 days. However, if life or liberty of any person is involved, the PIO is expected to reply within 48 hours.
